About Our District Evaluating the impact of the 2008 legislative session May 21, 2008 It was a busy weekend at the Legislature, and many of you may be wondering what impact our schools could expect, if any, as a result of recent legislative actions. The results of the 2008 legislative session will require some analysis before the School Board can consider any action. But we do know that Mounds View Public Schools can expect to receive about $580,000 in one-time funding, based on a $51 per-pupil increase. One-time funding like this creates challenges for school districts because budget planning should not be done in single-year increments. If you recall, this year during the budget development process the School Board emphasized the need to view our financial status over a two-year period of 2008-09 and 2009-10. This is why a fund balance is being maintained in the 2008-09 projection, in order to somewhat cushion the reductions necessary in 2009-10. This is very important as we strive to maintain comprehensive programs for students over time. On our Legislative web page, we've posted a summary of actions as they relate to our school district's priorities at www.moundsviewschools.org/legislation.asp. To stay informed of the latest developments, I also encourage you to visit our School Board meeting summary page at www.moundsviewschools.org/school_board_2003_04.asp. Any official actions taken by the School Board will be posted there online. Finally, please join me in thanking legislators who devoted efforts to support public school education throughout the state. |
