About Our District
Talking about our reputation

April 6, 2009

It's safe to say that when Minnesotans talk about the best school districts in the state, they often mention Edina Public Schools at the top of their list. So whenever I hear someone refer to Mounds View Public Schools as "the Edina of the northern suburbs," I never take offense. But I'm also fairly quick to point out that Edina is actually better known as "the Mounds View of the western suburbs."

I think many factors contribute to a school district's reputation - some positively and some negatively. Test scores, co-curricular programs, successful or unsuccessful levy attempts, high-profile behavior incidents, unique facilities, enrollment trends, spending decisions . . . any of these elements and more can quickly become the one defining trait that summarizes the school district's reputation in the eye of the public. For better or worse, a district's name alone can invoke a powerful image that's sometimes difficult to shake.

When you think of Mounds View Public Schools, what key quality or aspect comes to mind first? For what are we best known?

Parents with children in our classrooms have a unique insight into our schools. So this week, I encourage all parents to help us better understand our District's reputation. First, I invite parents to take a very brief online survey about what they believe are the defining characteristics of Mounds View Public Schools to them. The survey is available here.

After taking the survey, parents can participate in a digital discussion on our Chalkboard Chatroom at www.moundsviewschools.org/chat.asp. Visitors can post comments and read others' viewpoints as parents describe and discuss the main characteristic they believe best defines Mounds View Public Schools.

The survey and chatroom close at noon on Friday, April 10. I hope you will tell us what you think.
