Service Learning

2009 -2010 Service Learning Projects

The Vision
Our vision is that every student (K-12) will have at least one opportunity per level (elementary, middle and high school) to participate in a service learning project.

Definition
Service learning is a teaching strategy that integrates meaningful service with instruction and reflection to enrich learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. For youth, teachers, administrators, community members and parents, service learning offers a dynamic path toward a more engaging classroom and service experiences.

Benefits of Service Learning

Service learning helps student feel connected to their schools and local community.

Service learning excites and engages students. Students retain what they learn during service learning projects.

Service learning demonstrates staff and student commitment to the community. Students discover there are real needs right here in their communities.

Examples of Service Learning Projects from Mounds View School District
-Fourth graders learn about nutrition, map skills, following detailed directions and letter writing while delivering Meals On Wheels to local senior citizens.
-Second graders learned about hunger issues by answering research questions, performing a "Can-Do" play and making lunches for a homeless shelter.
-Middle school students conducted research regarding the economy, housing, foreclosures, poverty and the use of a food shelf. Project concluded with a food drive.
-Middle school students provided cross-age tutoring to elementary students.
-Middle school students made speeches, developed a website, wrote letters, learned social studies vocabulary and gained global awareness while raising funds to support H20 for Life.
- Art teachers and students created more than 800 ceramic bowls which were sold at Empty Bowls, a community event that included a meal of soup and bread made by the Family and Consumer Science teachers and students.
