A golden anniversary 
Island Lake Elementary School in Shoreview will take a look back in time with students, parents, alumni and the community on Friday, September 28, in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The school’s lawn will play host to a 1950s car display while a live band performs in the gymnasium - welcoming partygoers to join in a Sock Hop. The school’s cafeteria will be dressed as an old-time malt shop and attendees will enjoy viewing classic movie and television clips along with ‘50s memorabilia. Homecomings 2007

This week is Homecoming Week at Irondale High School. Home varsity events for the week include volleyball at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 27; girls’ tennis at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 28; and football at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 28, with a halftime show featuring the Irondale High School Marching Knights. Earlier in the evening, Irondale will induct seven former athletes into the school’s athletic hall of fame. Mark Schonhardt, 1974; Jeff Rohrman, 1982; Bryan Guse, 1993; Rob Halva, 1983; Joe Biernat, 1989; Katie Herman, 2001; and Kwadwo Mensah, 2001; will be recognized at a pre-homecoming game ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in the cafeteria and at about 6:30 or 6:40 p.m. on the field before the football game. 



The week of October 1 is Homecoming Week at Mounds View High School. Coronation takes place on Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Home varsity events for the week include girls’ soccer on Monday and Thursday, October 1 and 4; girls’ tennis on Tuesday, October 2; boys’ soccer on Thursday, October 4; volleyball on Thursday, October 4; girls' swimming on Thursday, October 4; and football on Friday, October 5. Visit www.suburbaneast.org for details. On Friday, October 5, the Mounds View High School Hall of Fame will welcome seven new inductees prior to the football game. The 2007 Hall of Fame inductees include Fred McSherry, 1958; Herb King and Don Hewitt, Community Members; Gary Engen, teacher/coach; Wendy Satterlee, 1988; Patty “Walch” Percival, 1984; and Bob Kranz, 1965.



Music of the Knight

More than a dozen marching bands from around the Midwest will compete in the 15th annual Music of the Knight marching band festival on Saturday, September 29, at the Irondale athletic field. Opening ceremonies will begin at 5:45 p.m. The Irondale Marching Knights will close the competition with their 2007 program “Nevermore,” based on Edgar Allen Poe’s classic poem, The Raven. By the dawn’s early light

Joining schools across the country, more than 200 Chippewa Middle School students gathered around the flagpole in honor of The National Anthem Project on Friday, September 14. Chippewa’s sixth, seventh and eighth-grade choirs and orchestras performed the National Anthem, marking the 193rd anniversary of the Anthem’s birth. A variety of locally elected officials and Mounds View School District representatives were in attendance.


Enrollment continues to decline 
For the 10th year in a row, K-12 enrollment in Mounds View Public Schools has declined. This fall’s 2007-08 enrollment is 9,685 students – down 244 students from last fall and 32 students lower than earlier projections. Overall, kindergarten, elementary school and middle school enrollment is higher than projected, while high school enrollment is lower than projected. Class size averages in every level are within the School Board-approved ranges which were established to fulfill goals set with the successful operating levy last fall. A Top 5 school district
For the second consecutive year, Mounds View Public Schools ranked among the top five districts in the state for the most National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. In total, 12 Irondale High School students and three Mounds View High School students were named semifinalists. Recognition by the National Merit Scholarship program is one of the highest honors a student can receive for outstanding academic achievement.
