Saluting our veterans
Island Lake Elementary School’s fourth- and fifth-grade choir will present a concert to honor local veterans on Tuesday, November 13, at 7 p.m. in the Mounds View High School Auditorium. Special guests will include the Mounds View Chamber Singers and Chippewa Middle School’s eighth-grade Girls’ Ensemble. The event is open to the public and admission is free. Donations will be accepted at the door for deployed troops, including DVD movies, microwave popcorn, instant drink mix packets (Crystal Light, Swiss Miss, etc.), eye drops and baby wipes in small packages.

While you’re there, be sure to check out the display in the Commons honoring Irondale High School and Mounds View High School graduates who are veterans of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard or Marines. A display case contains photos, names and memorabilia of alumni service personnel.

School scores
Like every district in the state, Mounds View publishes an annual report on curriculum, instruction and student achievement. The 2006-07 report is now available and features:
* Schools’ performances compared to state averages
* Principals’ perspectives on their schools’ goals and results
* Demographic data for every school

To find data of interest, visit the "District and school test scores" page under the Curriculum section at www.moundsviewschools.org.

Giving, not receiving
Public school districts like Mounds View are usually on the receiving end of community gift-giving and donations. This fall, it’s the employees of Mounds View who are making news for their record-setting contributions to the 2007 Charitable Fund Drive. Total giving among Mounds View Public Schools employees was $41,812 -- an increase from last year’s total of $40,455. This amount represents a significant commitment to the local community on the part of District staff who made donations to a variety of arts, education and social services agencies and organizations around the Twin Cities.

Say ‘yes’ to no
Dr. David Walsh, a renowned author, speaker and president of the National Institute on Media and the Family, will return this fall to Mounds View Public Schools to discuss the topic of his new book, No: Why kids of all ages need to hear it and ways parents can say it. Walsh will speak at the Resource Fair at Mounds View High School on November 27 from 7 – 9 p.m. The Resource Fair will be open from 6:30 – 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
