Chatroom chatter For one week, Mounds View Public Schools opened its Chalkboard Chatroom, inviting the community to join a digital discussion. Using a schoolhouse model that illustrates several areas of the District’s strategic planning, the community was asked, “Which room or rooms of the schoolhouse are of greatest interest or concern to you and why?” Some 46 residents posted comments, and about 1,500 visitors read the posts, including superintendent Dan Hoverman. To read the comments, visit www.moundsviewschools.org/chat.asp. In the coming weeks, Hoverman and his Cabinet group will identify and review major themes from the comments and incorporate the themes into short-term and long-term strategic planning efforts. Throughout the year, Hoverman will share progress reports through his E-newsletter, “News and VIEWS.” Wellness on the web Student and staff wellness continues to be an ongoing priority for the District. This year, Mounds View is meeting the Gold Standard guidelines for providing healthy foods as created by a national health organization called Action for Healthy Kids. In addition, the District has posted a variety of links to helpful wellness and nutrition resources at www.moundsviewschools.org/wellness.asp. Families can review nutritional values for lunch menus, view the District wellness regulation and get more information on physical activity or school health services. This week, District staff members are recording healthy activities on BINGO cards, and at the end of the week, Human Resources will tally the total percentage of winners from each building. The site with the highest percentage of BINGO winners will win a healthy reward from superintendent Dan Hoverman. Latino NightMore than 250 parents and children gathered at Pike Lake Education Center for Latino Family Night on December 7, an event hosted by the English Language Learners program of Mounds View Public Schools to offer resources and information to the Hispanic community. Mounds View Schools first introduced Latino Family Nights five years ago to address the growing Hispanic population in the District and to spread the word about the various programs and resources available to the Latino/Hispanic community. At this year’s event, attendees enjoyed food prepared by an El Salvadorian family in the District and heard from a Hispanic psychologist about cultural adjustment issues that face the Hispanic community. Families got to know each other through various activities and took home a plethora of information on school and community programs. Spanish-speaking District staff members were on-hand to answer questions and provide information, along with Spanish-language teachers and students. Translators were available for those who needed them. Grant money from the Suburban Ramsey Family Collaborative and Children & Family Services Minneapolis paid for the event. Holiday giving In the spirit of the season, schools throughout the District are hosting various holiday drives to benefit families in need. To view examples of just a few of the many activities our schools are engaged in, visit www.moundsviewschools.org. Volunteers are needed at Ralph Reeder Food Shelf’s “Operation Joy” call center in Roseville and food donations are being accepted at BankCherokee on Village Center Drive in North Oaks until December 14. Call 651-639-6021 for more information on Ralph Reeder volunteer opportunities. College students and other recent graduates often return home to our communities over the holidays. If you know any alumni of Mounds View Public Schools, please encourge them to stay in touch with each other and their alma mater through the District's alumni web pages at www.moundsviewschools.org/alumni. |
