Planning ahead
One of the most eagerly anticipated District publications is hot off the press. The School Board recently approved the 2008-09 school year calendar. Tuesday, September 2, kicks off the new school year. The calendar includes non-school days totaling one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Winter Break and one week for Spring Break. Details are available at www.moundsviewschools.org/calendars.asp.

Spotlight Awards

Sunnyside Elementary School and Irondale High School have demonstrated “academic excellence through significant gains in student achievement” according to the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation – which recently announced both schools are recipients of the 2007 School Spotlight Award. This is the second consecutive year Sunnyside earned the award, and the first for Irondale. Both schools were selected for the honor based on their attention to curriculum, instruction, assessment, the important role of staff development and how these roles contribute to academic gains for all students.

Young Americans
Nearly 200 Mounds View Public Schools students performed with the international touring group The Young Americans, January 20-22 at Irondale High School. The Young Americans tour the world working with school-age musicians to improve their singing, acting and dancing in a three-day workshop that culminates in a final extravaganza performance. The January 22 Young American performance at Irondale drew a crowd of more than 500. Irondale High School choir director Jason Etten organized the event.

District demolition
Last month, workers razed the former District Service Center in Roseville. The building was vacated in 2005 when most of its central administrative service employees relocated to Snail Lake Education Center in Shoreview, which is 100 percent occupied. The District plans to keep the Roseville property while an underground source of contamination naturally attenuates, possibly for the next five-15 years. This spring, after some additional excavation work, the site will be graded and seeded to become green space, before the District looks for a future buyer.

How much is enough?
Every year, the School Board sets priorities that if acted upon by the Legislature would produce enough money to meet the District’s needs. This year’s Legislative Priorities call for lawmakers to increase the basic formula by a minimum of an additional two percent (to $5,226 for the 2008-09 year). The Priorities also ask the state to fully fund Special Education mandates and to preserve districts’ local control in designing benefit plans. Service to youth

Several Mounds View Public Schools staff members and an Irondale student have earned 2008 “Outstanding Service to Youth” awards. Northwest Youth and Family Services will present the award to Highview Middle School teacher Sandy Bona-Czech, Sunnyside Elementary School teacher Peggy Cardenas, Irondale High School associate principal Pat McDonald and Irondale senior Gus Connelly at a February 7 celebration at the New Brighton Family Service Center. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service and commitment to area youth.

Retirement announced
Michele Brouse, principal at Island Lake Elementary School in Shoreview, recently announced she will retire at the end of the 2007-08 school year. A search for a replacement will begin in mid to late February. The District expects to name a new principal for Island Lake early this spring, with the new principal starting July 1 – ready to begin the 2008-09 school year. Brouse ends a 37-year career in education after 15 years with the District, serving as principal at Island Lake, Valentine Hills Elementary School in Arden Hills and Sunnyside Elementary School in New Brighton.
