News and Views -- May 22, 2008 Pomp and Circumstance More than 1,000 students are preparing for commencement ceremonies around the District in the coming weeks. In chronological order: * Career and Life Transition Program (Shoreview) -- May 22, 5:30 p.m., Shoreview Community Center * Oak Grove High School -- May 28, 10:30 a.m., Oak Grove Gym * Career and Life Transition Program (Har Mar) -- May 29, 6:30 p.m., John Rose Oval, Roseville * Adult Basic Education -- June 2, 7:00 p.m., New Brighton Family Service Center * Area Learning Center -- June 4, 4:00 p.m., Benson Great Hall at Bethel * Irondale High School -- June 4, 7:00 p.m., Irondale * Mounds View High School -- June 5, 7:00 p.m., Roy Wilkins Auditorium New Board member During its May 13 meeting, the School Board elected Greg Madsen of Arden Hills to serve the remainder of Board member Noreen Thompson’s term which expires January 4, 2010. Thompson recently announced her resignation from the School Board after four years of service. Her resignation is effective May 30, 2008. After interviewing seven candidates on May 5, the Board appointed Madsen who will be sworn in at the June 10 Board meeting. Madsen is an education law attorney who specializes in advising and advocating on behalf of Minnesota public school districts. His children attend Mounds View Public Schools, and he has served as a classroom volunteer and a coach and board member for area youth athletics. Other applicants included William Fairman, Shoreview; John Hakes, Shoreview; Jack Brunell, New Brighton; Amy Jones, Arden Hills; Pam Axberg, New Brighton; and Brian Strub, New Brighton. Legislative updates It was a busy weekend at the Legislature, and many are wondering what impact Mounds View Public Schools could expect, if any, as a result of recent legislative actions. Early next week, a brief summary of the 2008 session will be posted on the Legislative web page at www.moundsviewschools.org/legislation.asp. Getting fit Highview Middle School’s Get Fit Twin Cities team ranked in the top 100 teams in the Twin Cities after completing a 100-day fitness challenge through Mounds View Public Schools and Get Fit Twin Cities. More than 1,000 teams across the metro area participated in the 2008 Get Fit Twin Cities competition including 18 Mounds View Public Schools teams and 148 participants District-wide. Mounds View teams completed nearly 7,000 hours of physical activity to improve overall health and promote wellness within the District. Latino Night The final Latino Family Night event of the year will be held on Thursday, May 22, from 5:45 to 8 p.m. at Pike Lake Education Center. Spanish-speaking District staff members will provide school and community program information and will be on-hand to answer questions.
