World Languages forum
After years of persistent and wide-spread community interest, Mounds View Public Schools plans to implement a World Language Program in 2009-2010. The program demonstrates a commitment to prepare students to compete in a global marketplace by introducing a language in all elementary and middle schools. The implementation of a language will move students progressively toward language proficiency in a cost neutral manner and will cause no disruption to the elementary and middle school core curriculum.

In addition to feedback already gathered through parent focus groups, feasibility studies with teachers, peer districts and consultant reviews, the School Board will hold a Focused Forum at the beginning of the 7 p.m. November 18 School Board meeting at Snail Lake Education Center, 350 Highway 96 West, Shoreview. The Forum will allow participants to share perspectives and insights which ultimately can influence the direction of the program. For more information, visit www.moundsviewschools.org/taskforces.asp.

No levy on Election Day
Like most districts, Mounds View now relies on referendum levies to help pay for basic educational expenses. After approving a 2006 levy referendum request, voters in the District will not be asked to approve any additional levy requests on the ballot this fall. The District has used levy dollars to keep class sizes in check, programs in place and increased the fund balance to help offset reductions anticipated in fiscal year 2009-2010. To view the impact of the levy on this school year, visit www.moundsviewschools.org/pdf07/levyimpact08.pdf.

On Election Day, two District schools will serve as polling places for community residents. Turtle Lake Elementary School will serve voters in Shoreview Precinct 7 while Valentine Hills Elementary School will accommodate voters in Arden Hills Precinct 3.

Fall theatre
Irondale High School’s “Little Shop of Horrors” musical is slated for November 6, 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door, prior to the performance.

Mounds View High School’s “You Can't Take it With You” performances are scheduled for November 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and November 8 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available in the high school’s commons area Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (no ticket sales on October 31). Tickets can also be purchased one hour prior to each performance.

Pinewood named School of Excellence
Pinewood Elementary School has been recognized as a 2008-2009 Minnesota School of Excellence by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals' Association. The Minnesota School of Excellence program is recognized by the Minnesota Department of Education and National Association of Elementary School Principals. It was established in 1986 to endorse schools whose principal, staff, students and community demonstrate a team effort and the desire to strengthen education by successfully undertaking a research-based process, based upon six standards of effective elementary schools. Pinewood Elementary is among nine schools recognized as a Minnesota School of Excellence this year.

Closer contact with students’ progress
A new and improved online communication tool called SchoolView is allowing parents to stay in closer contact with their students’ progress. This fall, the District launched the parent portal offering improved electronic access to students’ records. Parents of elementary school students can view attendance reports and contact information, while parents of middle and high school students can view attendance reports, contact information, assignments and grades. All parents will be notified in the future as additional features become available. Parents who have not already done so are encouraged to please log onto the SchoolView system at www.moundsviewschools.org and take advantage of this new communication resource.

Project Green Fleet
Mounds View Public Schools students are breathing cleaner air thanks to pollution control equipment that was installed on 25 percent of the school buses used by the District. These school bus retrofits are part of Project Green Fleet, a nationally recognized collaboration of businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations to reduce school bus pollution. The green buses from First Student that are serving District schools aim to reduce engine emissions by up to 50 percent.

Editor's note:
Snow day alerts? Families watch the phone, not TV

With the push of a button, school principals and District office officials can send recorded voice mail messages to parents alerting them to the latest information – thanks to the Mounds View Messaging system launched last year. Once a message is recorded and sent, most families receive a call within about 20 minutes. In the event of a snow day or weather-related emergency, Mounds View Messaging will become the primary method of District-to-home communication. However, the District will continue to communicate school cancellation information through traditional methods including the web site www.moundsviewschools.org, cable channel 20 and through cooperating local media outlets.
