News and Views -- November 26, 2008 Everyone’s schools Like most school districts today, about 80 percent of Mounds View Public Schools’ residents do not have school-aged children. But because of the impact schools have on communities, 100 percent of residents should care about our schools. The fall issue of School Talk, the District’s newsletter, offers 10 reasons why, including: 1. The Mounds View School District is one of the largest employers in the area. 2. School facilities are resources that belong to -- and are available for -- all neighbors. 3. Our Top 10 reputation among metro districts creates high-demand housing. Election results On Election Day, more than 100 Mounds View Public Schools student volunteer election judges and some 1,358 student voters participated in Kids Voting, a nationwide non-partisan program that strives to build good citizenship habits and encourage voting. K-12 students who live within the boundaries of the Mounds View School District were given the opportunity to cast their vote at special voting booths set up at most District polling sites. To see how District students voted, please visit www.moundsviewschools.org/irondale/social/KVresults.html. Talking World Languages The School Board held a Focused Forum with the community at the beginning of the November 18, 2008, Board meeting to discuss efforts around introducing a World Language program to the elementary and middle schools in 2009-2010. The Forum allowed participants to share perspectives and insights which ultimately can influence the direction of the program. To read a summary of the community’s and the Board’s comments, or to download a list of facts and myths surrounding this issue, visit the World Languages Task Force page at www.moundsviewschools.org/taskforces.asp. Should students stay home? Providing a healthy environment is a challenge in schools where hundreds of students routinely share confined spaces. Parents and students are frequently concerned about when students are well enough to attend school and when students should stay home. For a guide to general health practices for school-aged children and important vaccination information for the 2008 flu season, please visit http://www.moundsviewschools.org/wellness.asp. Truth in Taxation Mounds View will hold a Truth in Taxation hearing at 6 p.m. on December 2, 2008, at Snail Lake Education Center, 350 Highway 96 West, in Shoreview. The goal of the meeting is to: * Provide information regarding Minnesota's property tax system * Explain the school portion of property tax statements * Discuss the school district's proposed 2009 taxes * Discuss the school district's 2008-2009 budget * Take questions or comments To download information prior to the hearing, visit the Budgets and Finance web page at www.moundsviewschools.org/budget.asp.
