Non-resident enrollment
Applications for non-resident enrollment are welcome at this time, however interest usually exceeds spaces. Acceptance is limited each year to grades and schools where non-resident enrollment would not negatively impact class sizes. The state-mandated Open Enrollment deadline is January 15, 2009, while the District’s Non-resident Agreement priority application deadline is February 1, 2009. Best high schools
Irondale High School and Mounds View High School were both named among the best high schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine analyzed academic and enrollment data from more than 21,000 public high schools and then placed selected schools into gold, silver, bronze, or honorable mention categories. No Minnesota high schools won gold medal honors. Irondale and Mounds View were among only 13 Minnesota high schools ranked in the silver category. Silver medals were awarded to schools with a College Readiness Index of 20 points or higher. The College Readiness Index uses Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmarks of success. Other silver medal Minnesota schools include Edina, Wayzata, St. Louis Park, Bloomington Jefferson, Roseville Area, Rochester Century, Minneapolis Henry, Eastview, Houston, St. Anthony and TrekNorth in Bemidji, Minn.

Chinese language
This month, the School Board approved adding Chinese language instruction as an elective course beginning in 2009-2010 at Irondale and Mounds View High Schools. This comes in response to community interest in expanding the world language offerings at the high school level, and in response to the interest of the Board and administration in offering a non-Western language. Chinese will join American Sign Language, French, German and Spanish at both high schools, dependant upon sufficient student registrations and the ability to staff the Chinese language program with a qualified instructor.

The Board also heard a report providing answers to the most commonly asked questions by community members at the recent Focused Forum on the world language effort to add the program in the elementary and middle schools in 2009-2010. To review those questions and answers, visit the World Languages web page at www.moundsviewschools.org/taskforces.asp.

College readiness
College readiness requires early preparation – even as early as 8th grade. In October, Mounds View Public Schools 8th-graders took the ACT EXPLORE test to gain an understanding of their readiness for college and to make the most of their opportunities in high school. Results provide families with actual ACT predictor scores, a career/interest inventory and course planning guidelines for future high school work. Schools are currently sharing results with students during the day, while evening events are scheduled for families: Chippewa Middle School: December 15, 7 p.m.
Edgewood Middle School: December 16, 6 p.m. (prior to concert)
Highview Middle School: January 8, 6:30 p.m. (prior to Parent Association Meeting)

For more information about this college preparation effort and others, contact 651-621-6042.
