Computer virus update
In the wake of a February 10 computer virus that disabled the District's 40 servers and 3,500 computers, the District's tech team has completed reimaging the majority of staff computers. All teachers and staff can now access their workstation computers and are able to communicate via e-mail again. By the end of this week, the technology department expects all student-use computers in stationary labs to be operational. Next week, the team plans to address wireless mobile carts. At this time, students and staff should not use flash drive devices on any District computer. Despite having the latest antivirus software, the majority of Mounds View Public Schools servers and computers were infected with a variation of the same virus that has disabled millions of computers around the country. In response, the District's 12-person tech team has been working around the clock, visiting every school to reimage the District's computers.

Budgeting for 2009-2010
In approving a set of budget assumptions, the School Board recently considered action on transportation and co-curricular fees that do not yield the money it takes to provide transportation services and co-curricular programs. In response, the School Board approved a $10 fee increase for all high school co-curricular, fine arts and non-athletic activities, and eliminated the distinction that previously provided ninth-graders with a reduced participation fee. The Board kept the family maximum cap at $700. Motions to increase the student transportation fee were defeated, resulting in no bus fee increase for the 2009-2010 school year. In addition, any current District positions that become vacant will not be filled automatically. Instead, vacated positions will be reviewed by the Superintendent, Cabinet, the school principal and the program supervisor to evaluate potential cost savings and to determine options. Physics Fairs
Irondale High School's annual Physics Fair is slated for March 2 at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium at Irondale High School. In conjunction with the Physics Fair, Irondale will host its first-ever STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) career fair. Students and parents will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from several local companies, government agencies, and universities that involve STEM careers. The 12th annual Mounds View High School Physics Fair is scheduled for Monday, March 9, at 6 p.m. in Mounds View High School's gymnasium. This year's Fair will include 10 classes, 78 groups, and more than 300 student participants. District high schools host Physics Fairs to highlight the results of students' long-term group projects in which five components are assembled into a chain reaction sequence and principles of physics and engineering are put into practice. Funding for the Physics Fairs is provided by the 621 Foundation.

Editor's note: Legislative priorities
Every year, the School Board sets priorities that if acted upon by the Legislature would produce enough money to meet the District's needs. What did the School Board set as priorities for 2009? Visit www.moundsviewschools.org/legislation.asp.
