News and Views -- June 17, 2009 Graduations . . . in images Irondale and Mounds View graduation ceremonies are available for viewing via video or photo albums. To view videos online or browse photos, visit www.moundsviewschools.org. Both high schools' commencement exercises are also broadcast on Cable Access Channel 20. Irondale's ceremony airs weekdays on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. Mounds View's ceremony airs weekdays on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. New principals named In June, Irondale High School named Scott Gengler as principal, replacing Colleen Wambach who is retiring after 34 years of service to Mounds View Public Schools. Gengler is an award-winning high school principal who was serving as principal of Watertown-Mayer High School in Watertown, Minn. for the past eight years. Prior to that role, he was an associate administrator for three years at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis. Gengler also has served as a health teacher, physical education instructor and coach at Minnehaha Academy and at Pequot Lakes High School. He holds education graduate degrees from the University of St. Thomas and an undergraduate degree from Bemidji State University. Following a spring principal search at Highview Middle School, the District named Heather Timmons to replace Mona Fadness, who is transferring to Chippewa Middle School in July following the departure of principal Sheila Eller. Timmons has served Highview as Dean of Students for five years and was instrumental in designing and executing a variety of behavior management and school respect programs. She also was a Highview classroom teacher for four years and principal of Mounds View's Elementary Targeted Services summer school program for several years. She holds education graduate degrees from the University of St. Thomas and from Saint Mary's University. She earned her undergraduate education degree from Texas A & M University in Commerce. Summer flu Summer is not usually a time when parents need to worry about the flu, but our county public health department encourages parents to remain alert this summer. Many students will join Mounds View Public Schools for summer programs and activities. Our message to everyone is the same: Influenza, including H1N1, is still around, and everyone needs to continue to practice basic flu prevention. Summer schools More than 1,200 students are expected to participate in a variety of summer school programs held around the District this summer. Programs include: * Fitness for Life * Health Education * English as a Second Language * Orchestra and Band lessons * Summer Academy * Targeted Services Summer Programs * Super Summer In addition, recreational programs are offered through Mounds View's Community Education program, and the YMCA operates summer programs and activities at schools throughout the District during the summer months. Summer projects A variety of maintenance projects are scheduled this summer across the District, including reroofing at the District's Area Learning Center in New Brighton, remodeling several bathrooms and installing energy efficient flushers, replacing some floor covering, seal coating select District parking lots and miscellaneous painting projects at all of the sites. Wall and window repairs are taking place at Pinewood Elementary School, Sunnyside Elementary School Turtle Lake Elementary School and Chippewa Middle School.
