News & Views -- September 29, 2009 Flu and you As concerns have heightened regarding the H1N1 flu virus this fall, the District has created an operational response plan and has posted a variety of other helpful resources for parents at www.moundsviewschools.org. Please keep in mind these important reminders: 1. Students and staff who are ill should stay home. 2. Schools will likely remain open, unless staffing issues prevent the safe operation of school. 3. All families and staff should have a plan in the event they cannot return to school the next day, or in the unlikely event that the school is closed. This plan should include arrangements for daycare and becoming familiar with the school’s plan for making homework assignments available in alternative forms. A Top 10 school district For the third consecutive year, Mounds View Public Schools ranked among the top 10 districts in the state for the most National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. In total, five Mounds View High School students and two Irondale High School students were named semifinalists. Recognition by the National Merit Scholarship program is one of the highest honors a student can receive for outstanding academic achievement. For a list of top Metro schools and the names of the Mounds View Public Schools semifinalists, please visit www.moundsviewschools.org/star.asp. SEEing energy savings The District has avoided $397,209 in energy costs since Mounds View Public Schools partnered with the Schools for Energy Efficiency program in July of 2008. This cost avoidance reflects a 12 percent reduction in energy use between July 2008 to June 2009. To see how much was saved at each site and to learn more about what the District is doing to save non-renewable resources, please visit www.moundsviewschools.org/news.asp. Follow us Families who are familiar with social media web sites can now follow us online. This summer Irondale, Mounds View and the District itself launched Facebook pages and opened Twitter accounts. Now "fans" and "followers" can receive timely information, join online discussions and receive important insights about events and issues in our high schools and the District. These social media tools, including photo and video sites like Flickr and YouTube, are just another way our schools can connect with families. Click here to join the conversation. Enrollment leveling out Current enrollment numbers indicate 9,610 K-12 students are attending Mounds View Public Schools this fall. These numbers represent a decrease of about 30 students from last October, but this year's enrollment exceeded projections for 2009-2010 by 95 students. Based on the last two years, the rate of K-12 enrollment decline has significantly slowed. For a chart of projected enrollments and average class sizes by school and grade, click here.
