Philosophy slam winners
July 9, 2009 -- Highview 7th-grader Rebecca Johnson recently won best in the nation for her musical entry into this year's "Kids Philosophy Slam." The slam, based in Lanesboro, received over 5,000 entries from around the nation. Rebecca's original piano composition was submitted this past winter, and she received news of her award in June. Her composition can be heard on the contest's web page at www.philosophyslam.org. She also won best musical entry in the Highview philosophy slam in February. Highview Middle School also had two other 7th-graders make it to the finals of this year's national contest. Audrey Kristufek won 5th place for her essay, and Kelly Catlin received "honorable mention." This year's theme was "Greed or giving: which has a greater impact on society?"
